Battleborn will be officially Free to play very soon.
Gearbox boss, Randy Pitchford informs that Battleborn will be free to play very soon. While the game will be free, upgrades will not be. The game will include in-game purchases, sort of like a mobile game. Multiplayer modes and a hand full of characters will be free to play. You will have to pay for future DLC and additional characters to continue on.
While it seems like this is free to play version, Pitchman holds out hope that this is only a trial version
We have some unannounced plans to do a trial version of the game that would be free and from which retail can be purchased along with DLC.

I personally think this is sad news for Battleborn as well as 2K. We actually liked this game and it had tons of potential. Unfortunately, releasing the game so close to the popular Overwatch really sealed its fate. Battleborn and Overwatch are so similar that it would have been impossible for both games to succeed at the same time. Given how much publicity Overwatch received before its release crushed any chance Battleborn had to be successful.
Developers continue to hold out hope that the game will take off but at some point its better to pull the cord start over. I do, however, admire the fight
“We think there remains an opportunity to grow the audience for this unique experience over time,” Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick said, “and 2K will continue to drive engagement and recurrent consumer spending on the title through add-on content and virtual currency.”
Battleborn has a battle on its hands. We will see how this ends.
